is along the i-95 corridor from baltimore to d.c. we have seen a couple of light snow showers in the region. but the other thing you notice is this is really starting to get out of here. we are ending our rain after one, two, even three inches of rain has fallen in the past day or two. rain is moving off to the east, outside of the beltway. off towards virginia and still inside the beltway towards prince george's county. so we'll continue to watch as this moves out. the wider picture shows it better as the whole storm moves out. as the storm moves out as far as the rain, the snow, the sleet, something else is moving in and that's the wind. chuck bell is outside right now. it's not just the wind, it's the brutally cold temperatures once again. >> reporter: absolutely. wind plus cold equals windchills that you'll really need to be ready for if you're going to be outside later this evening or first thing tomorrow morning. currently the winds are gusting between 20 and 30 miles per hour between most of the metro area. hottest gust right now, 36 miles

per hour. winds could gust over 50 miles an hour. there's a wind advisory until midnight tonight. future windchills, teens and low 20s for future windchills. windchills back down to perhaps even the single digits across the shenandoah valley. getting out early on your thanksgiving morning, prepare for windchills in the teens. the wind will relax ha little bit during the day tomorrow. but it will stay chilly with highs in the 30 #s. and a light breeze keeps the windchills down to the 30s mark. yeah, and we are talking about the coldest thanksgiving that we have seen here in more than a decade and possibly two decades. we'll talk much more about the thanksgiving forecast and the the weekend forecast, too. we have an extra long weekend, at least most of us do. guys? >> thoung, doank you, doug.

all the the rain, snow and sleet is making a mess of getaway day. >> shomari stone is keeping an eye on it. >> reporter: that's right guys. and behind me traffic is moving slowly compared to most days. many of them are heading to new york. you have some folks driving home from their evening commute. but a lot of them, as far as honking and throwing up thumbs up lets us know they are heading for their thanksgiving travel plans. you look there and can see them coming around the loop. moments ago we shot video on the iphone and it's safe to say some of them are thanksgiving travelers. others are heading home. slippery road conditions and traffic is moving at a pace in some spots. doug kammerer and chuck bell are telling us tonight there could be some black ice. you can see that guy honking.

black ice in some spots. really be careful if you come out here. back out here live, a lot of these folks are driving and heading home and it's safe to say that in some spots we came across flurries. we also had rain. it's a mess out here. it's wet and slippery. police recommend that you drive carefully. >> here's what it looked like earlier. traveling i-95 and north of virginia. our crews found stop and go traffic all the way to fairfax and prince william counties. up in the skies things are not easier for those flying. here's a live look at denver's airport. nearly 500 cancellations at airports across the country. more than 4,200 other flights have been delayed because of the bad weather. the vast majority of the affected flights are heading to or leaving boston, new york, and philadelphia. inside reagan national the majority of passengers found

story. mark, we understand this is the second such attack in this area. >> reporter: well, that's exactly right. the first a july just a few blocks south of here, right long wisconsin avenue. in each case the suspect came up behind the woman, grabbed her and forced her into an alley. >> it's really frightening because this neighborhood is nice and i feel pretty safe. >> it was just after 10:00 last night. sources say the woman just left this atm on wisconsin avenue close to the maryland line. he accosted her and he ended up robbing her money and then forced her to an alley nearby. >> reporter: the suspect forced the woman to walk with him side-by-side as if they were a couple. he took her to this alley behind a funeral home and raped her. >> it shocks me this happened

to merge. news 4's transportation reporter adam tuss live at reagan national with a breakdown on what this could mean for consumers. adam? >> well, wendy, we all want a good deal when wefully, right? now that this airline merger is lly going through, it could mean more money in your pocket. flying for less. that's the idea, right? travelers will tell you they're always looking for -- >> the best deal out there, obviously. >> reporter: as part of the deal, american and us airways get to merge into the world's largest airline known as the new american. what does it mean here at dca? well, previously us airways and american operated seven out of every ten flights here. in order to merge, they required the new american to cut the number of flights to five out of every ten.

hanukkah will last until the evening of december 5th. and it's that rare holiday combo that has shoppers and stores scrambling tonight. >> because getting everything ready for two major celebrations at the same time isn't easy as news 4's chris gordon finds out. >> this silver spring bakery is busier than er. some call it thanksgivikkah because if two holidays are being celebrated together. >> we're going to have thanksgiving and hanukkah heels and light the minoras during thanksgiving. >> doughnuts fried in oil are the traditional treat for hanukkah. but this year in addition to jelly, caramel and chocolate fillings, they're also making pumpkin filled doughnuts. >> because of thanksgiving we decided to have pumpkin

since hanukkah and thanksgiving may not occur together again for more than 70,000 years. hanukkah is called the festival of lights that lasts for eight nights. down along the carolina coast, they blew the roof off a condominium complex. the twister that hit last night had winds up to 135 miles an hour. wow. yeah. >> yeah, and all part of the same storm. they had tornadoes in portion of florida, too. boston was up to 60 degrees. and parts of our area got to 60s. it feels like the 20s. as yes look outside across the

area, we starting to see the rain, snow, sleet. that is now finally moving out some locations finally pick up well over one to two inches of rain over the last 24 to 48 hours. storm team radar is showing most of the area is on the dry side. still seeing snow showers mixed in from time to time. and then over towards prince george's county. this is all very, very light. this will not impact any of your travel out there. although we are seeing wet roadways. the entire system continues to move out of here. here's where the warm air is. they had strong thunderstorms making its way up around the cape earlier today. back to the west, the cold air coming across the lakes. if you're traveling out towards pennsylvania, back towards pittsburgh, you could still run into a few more snow showers that way. some locations picking up three to six inches of snow over the past 24 hours back to the west. temperatures will start to fall quickly.

still 40 in fredricksburg. but the winds are picking up. and with that, we have the windchill. 24 in gaithersburg. and i think by this time tomorrow morning our windchills will be in the single digits to low teens in most locations. so tomorrow, thanksgiving, it's going to be on the cold side. a start of 26 with a windchill about 15. 1:00 is sunny and cold with a high of 36 # to 37 degrees and back to the 20s as the sun goes down. next seven days, the temperatures starting to go in the right direction. 40 on friday. so still very cold on friday. 42 on saturday. 47 on sunday. and near 50 as we move towards monday. our average high temperatures are still above 50. and we are predicting the next seven days to be not just below average, but well below average, and we're watching a potential

storm next tuesday that could bring us another little bit of rain or snow. not going to be a big storm at all, but it is something we're going to watch. take a look at the numbers. once again a high of 37 tomorrow. 40 degrees on friday. tomorrow, though, we'll have at least a little built of sunshine. so if you're heading outside, the wind is really the only factor. guys? >> all right, thanks, doug. there are development fls the shooting in los angeles that involved the police. >> we are just getting this information into the newsroom. a s.w.a.t. situation in the city of englewood has developed. one officer has been shot in the vest but is alert and conscious. we're showing you the scene in front of the home where the suspect is barricaded inside with two hostages. over a dozen officers are in the area right now. i think we have the live pictures. we're going to show them to you. we do not have them but police say they believe the whole situation began as a domestic

night, down to 36 by 7:00, 34 by 9:00 and down to 31 degrees, it will be very cold. windchills around 18 to 19 degrees. i'll have the thanksgiving forecast for you and more on the weekend. hourly workers are set to make well above the federal minimum wage. >> the county council voted on a measure to increase the minimum over the next four years. that's part of a move to create a regional minimum wage. tracee wilkins has our story. >> reporter: it's been four years since the minimum wage has been raised in maryland leaving many families at or bethrow the poverty line. >> you can't pay bills. you can't support children. you can't do anything off minimum wage. >> reporter: today that change to prince george's county with a vote that marks a semiregional

effort to pay more. >> these workers are doing their best. >> currently minimum wage is $7.25. and full time workers earn $15,000 a year. the new measure will raise the rate to $11.50 by 2017. full time workers will make about $24,000 a year. >> this measure is going to lift a all of us in the region. the money that goes in the pocket of the lowest wage earners is going to go right back into the economy. >> reporter: today the county amended the original bill so employers have four years to get to $11.50. it excludes workers who earn tip ls. >> this is a tiny step forward. >> she passed legislation that passed in montgomery county yesterday. she sat in on today's vote in prince george's and calls this a regional effort. >> they just passed it in prince

george's county. we're onto the district of columbia where we know they're poised to do the same thing. >> reporter: council members say they're prepared to override his veto if he does. coming up at 6:00, why some business owners are saying it was a mistake. i'm tracee wilkins. news 4. there's growing opposition to the d.c. fire department encrypting radios. this is after the response to the navy yard shootings when some of their radio calls were being streamed live online. the d.c. police department already encrypts its radios. two d.c. council members and the mayoral candidate spoke out in opposition to the fire department's plan. >> the fire department is different, and i'm going to really side with transparency for the public and for the media, and i think it's very important to keep an open eye. i think the open access to both the fire and even the police

calls is helpful to the press. especially and others. >> council member welles also emphasized that the department can go to encrypted channel at any time if it is dealing with a major public threat. one firefighter is recovering tonight after big flames brought down the roof of a condo building. that fire happened overnight near5th and ames streets northeast. this how they lit up the doorway before the roof collapsed. firefighters had to rescue seven people. we know eight people will have to find somewhere else to stay tonight. and the foreseeable future. no word yet on the cause. >> 90 minutes from now the community will hold a prayer service for the victims of the massive church fire in ocean city. two men were killed, including the pastor. according to church officials, the reverend david died of his injuries. one church member said the community is in shock.

. >> the man accused of faking an injury at the potomac avenue metro station is due in court yesterday. he sued metro for $15,000 claiming he injured his legs after slipping on a banana peel. when detectives reviewed the surveillance video, they say the banana peel wasn't on the ground.

video shows owens dropped something. they saw him glance up at the camera there, and then throw himself to the ground. a judge dismissed his lawsuit. there he goes. owens has been charged with second-degree fraud now. we first told you about a growing number against metro a week ago. now the i-heam has exposed multiple incidents of people staging injuries. the increase in fraud led metro to install multiple cameras on board the fleet of buses. only about 100 people actually follow up. to see the story go to nbcwashington.com and click on the investigations tab. we see them every year, the campers hoping to get a good deal. >> this year they're battling frimgd temperatures and in some cases sleet. david culver takes us to the front of the line to see how

problems will play a role in hair holiday spending. if you are keeping your eyes on the sky looking for celestial sights, you may have wasted your time. it was thought this comet would show us breathtaking views. now astronomers say it's not going to happen. >> they are like cats. they have tails and do what they want. >> these are tumbling icebergs and as a result, it's hard to know what will be facing towards earth. the best time to see it is 6:00 tomorrow morning in the southeast sky. if you're going outside to try to catch a glimpse of the comet, windchills will be about 18 degrees. may not want to do that. take a look at what's happening outside right now. the rain, the snow, the sleet, it's finally out of here.

we may see a couple of snow showers, snow flurries over the next few hours. that's about it as we continue to move out towards the east. as it does so, we're seeing a lot of clearing behind this. that will be good news tonight. we'll be able to dry out quickly. still lake-effect snow is coming back towards cleveland and pittsburgh. that's really the only area of concern on the maps. we had a lot of travel problems today. a lot today. tomorrow will be a lot nicer. 38 in gaithersburg and college park. reston coming in at 36 degrees and look at the windchills now. down to 24 in gaithersburg. 25 in baltimore and 25 in camp springs. some gusts upwards of 40 miles per hour. that's going to be the case tonight. the cold wind will usher in cold temperatures 22 in gaithersburg. a windchill tomorrow morning between 10 and 15 degrees. we are talking a very cold start
